According to Medicines (Advertisement and Sale) Act 1956, “advertisement” includes any notice, report, commentary, pamphlet, label, wrapper or other document, and any announcement made orally or by any means of producing or transmitting light or sound. For example, advertisement on television, radio, magazine, newspaper, brochure, internet, bunting, billboard, television program time slot, talk show, advertisement on the bus or public vehicle, testimony and advertorial.

Advertisement needs to be controlled due to the following reasons:

1. Advertisement that might confuses the consumer
2. Advertisement that might contains fraud element
3. Unregistered product
4. Non approved indication
5. Excessive medical claims

Advertisements that need the approval of Medical Advertisements Board are as follow:

1. Product Advertisement- Registered pharmaceutical and traditional products
2. Service Advertisement- Health services provided by hospital/ laboratory/ private clinic that is operated by registered medical practitioner (doctor)

Approved advertisement will be given a number started with KKLIU.
